The term “Information Literacy” was first introduced in 1974.
Is Information Literacy still relevant today? How about in the future? Is there any NEW meaning to Information Literacy these days?
To address these questions, Dr Shirley Wong, University Librarian of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, will talk about three related aspects:
(1) Changing landscape of information;
(2) Changing landscape of Information Literacy; and
(3) Strategies of university libraries to facilitate Information Literacy.
Regarding facilitation of Information Literacy, three strategies adopted by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Library will be shared:
(1) Open scholarship, including Open Educational Resources to reduce the digital divide;
(2) Collaborative projects among university libraries to create an Information Literacy MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) and to embed its learning elements into teaching programmes, especially in LMS (Learning Management Systems) courses; and
(3) Library space transformation to provide effective information experiences, including extensive collaborative areas and digital makerspace.
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Library has the highest entrance counts among all university libraries in Hong Kong. Although 99% of journals and 78% of books are electronic, there were 2.8 million library entrance counts in 2017/18, and 18,000 a day during the peak season.
